No; while the current implementation uses Sencha Touch to provide its user interface, the approach could be fairly trivially moved to other toolkits.

Does this have a future outside this study?

This depends entirely on the results of the trial workshops. If you are interested in trying the tool out and giving feedback, please let me know.
